My tween was so excited to getting digging when this Insect Excavation Kit from Dr. Cool arrived. I could hardly keeps her hands off it until I checked it out myself. This is a real science kit that has genuine bugs in it. How cool is that? What could be more fun on a weekend that digging out bugs? Not much if you are a curious kid. This is a fun kit for any kid that loves to discover. I have seen Dr. Cool science kits before at our local educational teaching store. They are always prominently displayed too and look fascinating. I was excited personally to check out this real bug dig it out science kit.
This hands-on dig kit contains a genuine spiny spider, fortune beetle and scorpion. They are all preserved in acrylic. The kit includes everything you need for your insect excavation project including a quality digging tool, brush and magnifying glass. This would be a great birthday gift too. If you home-school this would be a great way to learn more about bugs or science in a fun and interactive way.
Picking up this Insect Excavation Kit could also be a great way to start an insect collection. It really would be a perfect gift for any kid aged 6-12 that is interested in bugs, science, entomology, or paleontology. It also includes an informative and age appropriate 12-page informational guide for the kids.  It contains tons of cool science facts about insects and was actually written by teachers.  Kids will learn useful facts about insects, arthropods, and arachnids. I was also happily surprised to see the kit also  included an activity booklet. It had 10 challenging bug and science oriented puzzles and games for hours of extra fun and learning.

It was a bit challenging but my tween was determined to get to her bugs. The tools are not super sharp but with some work we got to each one of the specimens. I think younger kids might need a little hand from mom or dad. She liked the activity booklet and informational guide and actually sat down with those for a while as well. She is a serious reader so she loved that as well. This was a good project for an afternoon.

The Dr. Cool Insect Excavation Kit is a fun way to transform your child into a real paleontologist for a day. They get to excavate three genuine bug specimens just like a real paleontologist. Each of the specimens is buried inside a beetle-shaped digging block and is encased in acrylic. After some gentle work, you will uncover a real scorpion, spiny spider, and a fortune beetle specimen. Each one of the insects have been perfectly preserved inside the acrylic so that you can examine each of these incredible creatures from all sides. You’ll learn cool science facts about each of the creatures in this kit as well as general information about all kinds of cool bugs. I bet your little one will just totally bug-out with this fascinating excavation project. Buy an extra one to stash away for a birthday or holiday gift that will be a home run.
I love toys like this that are award winners. It was the winner of the Brain Toy Gold Award -Academic's Choice 2013.
