Can you believe the history behind these classic throat drops? In 1870 J. Herman Pine and his brother hung out a confectionery shingle on 8th Street above Walnut in Philadelphia and sold their first batch of what they called 'Pine Brothers Glycerine Tablets.' In an attempt to relieve his own sore throat and those of his family members, Mr. Pine, a former German confectionery maker, determined that by combining the soothing natural qualities of glycerin with the healing properties of gum acacia, he could soothe the irritation and discomfort of a sore throat. Of course he added some natural flavoring and a bit of sweetener.
The name was updated to Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops. Mr. Pine's discovery would become one of the most successful, most delicious and most unique throat lozenges in the world. The current recipe is almost identical to the original recipe created 140 years ago...thank goodness! In 1930 Pine Brothers was sold to the Life Savers Company and continued to be popular. Not surprisingly, Pine Brothers lozenges became a favorite of adults and children alike. I know I just loved these as a kid in the 1970's growing up in the northeast. All my friends did as well. The company was sold by Life Savers a while back and you just never could find them anymore.
Recently, Pine Brothers was acquired by 3 Sisters Home Products™. 3 Sisters tirelessly worked to find the source for the original Pine Brothers recipes. They redesigned and updated the packaging creating an exciting yet classic new look.
Two different options now...the puck and the bag. Alas, they did away with that old-timey box I remembered. It always got squished anyway. I am just happy that the natural product is once again being made in America, and is available nationally...yay!!! I am so happy to have an old favorite available again. They taste just as delicious as ever (I taste tested them!) and sure helped my sore throat this past week. Let me know if you remember this classic remedy and check them out for yourself!
